Zion to Bryce: The Utah Road Trip You Need to Do

Zion to Bryce: The Utah Road Trip You Need to Do

There’s a point on Highway 9 heading into Zion where the canyon walls close in so fast it feels like the road is being swallowed. You stop talking. You just drive and stare.

That moment set the tone for five of the best days I’ve had behind a wheel.

The Route

Day 1–2: Zion National Park

Start early — the shuttle fills up fast. The Narrows is non-negotiable, but don’t sleep on Emerald Pools if your knees will take it. Camp at Watchman Campground for sunset views of the West Temple.

Day 3: Bryce Canyon

The hoodoos at sunrise. Nothing else needs to be said. Set your alarm for 5:30, drag yourself to Sunrise Point, and watch the orange towers light up. It’s legitimately otherworldly.

Day 4: Grand Staircase–Escalante

Most people skip this. Don’t. The dirt roads require a high-clearance vehicle but the payoff — Calf Creek Falls, Slot canyons with zero crowds — is worth every mile of washboard.

Day 5: Capitol Reef

Underrated. Always underrated. Pick fruit from the historic orchards, do the Cassidy Arch trail, and start the drive home feeling like you found something most people missed.

Practical Notes

  • Best time: Late September to October for cooler temps and crowds that thin out
  • Permits: Zion Narrows requires nothing, but The Wave (nearby) needs a lottery permit months out
  • Fuel: Fill up at every opportunity — gas stations are sparse in Escalante country
  • Cell service: Expect none between Escalante and Torrey. Download offline maps beforehand
